Abstract

Urban Air Mobility (UAM) is a new novel concept of mobility that uses Electric Vertical Take-Off and Landing (eVTOLs) aircraft to transport people and cargo in urban areas in a fast, safe, efficient, and affordable way. Among the challenges of implementing the UAM, public perception is a key feature since it helps to identify factors that will impact directly the demand, such as user preferences, interests, and concerns. The literature identifies that airport shuttle is a potential market for the UAM since it offers a potentially better travel experience, at a reduced time, and acceptable cost while avoiding car traffic. However, there are still gaps in the research about the user’s priorities when selecting the UAM flight that best fits his interest. Therefore, the present study proposes an approach with Conjoint Analysis to quantify the decision variables that future potential UAM Brazilian users will use as a reference to select between available flights. To that end, we applied an online questionnaire to establish each respondent’s ranking of preferences from some permutations of travel cost, flight time, type of aircraft control (pilot or automatic system), and proximity to the departure area. The sample collected was mostly from the southeastern region of Brazil. The results showed that cost was the main variable that influenced the respondent’s decisions (57,26%), followed by flight time with 23,90%. The type of aircraft control only influenced the decision-making process by 6,78%, which implies a tendency to accept new technologies if it implies cheaper flights.
