Abstract

Roughness is one of the main parameters related to the comfort of landing, takeoff and taxiing operations on airport runways. The use of this parameter allows the definition of rational procedures for decision making in maintenance and rehabilitation strategies of an Airport Pavement Management System. The growth of civil aviation in the last decade generated the demand for greater care related to operational safety of landings and take-offs, since a considerable portion of incidents and accidents with aircraft occur on the ground during these phases of flight. Values beyond the limits established for roughness can result in excessive vertical displacement of aircraft, causing problems in reading the cockpit navigation instruments, increasing the braking distance of the aircraft and, in extreme cases, causing damage to the aircraft and affecting the passengers’ well-being. Thus, this paper aims to analyze roughness indices and their pertinence to the current roughness parameter regulated for Brazilian airport runways. The mean values obtained from the International Roughness Index (IRI), currently regulated in Brazil, and the Runway Roughness Index (RRI), together with the vertical acceleration in the cockpit (VACP), were evaluated by means of correlations, for 9 longitudinal profiles of different roughness conditions, ten speeds and two aircraft (Boeing 737 and Boeing 747). The results indicate that the IRI shows conservative values for the runway roughness condition classification compared to the RRI, which follows the aircraft VACP values. Also, the RRI values, referring to the variation of aircraft type and speed developed, are not well explained by the IRI, having reduced correlation coefficient (r) values for higher speeds and severity of irregularity.
